Safe, Sound, and Clear: Ultrasound Imaging at Columbus Regional
When you think of ultrasound, you might picture a baby’s first photo—but this technology goes far beyond pregnancy. Ultrasound is a versatile, noninvasive imaging tool used to diagnose and monitor a wide range of health conditions—from blood clots and gallbladder problems to muscle tears and vascular health.
At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our Imaging Services Program offers advanced ultrasound imaging with a focus on accuracy, safety, and compassionate care—helping your provider get a clearer view without radiation or discomfort.
What Is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound imaging (also called sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of your body. A handheld device called a transducer sends and receives these sound waves, which bounce off internal organs, tissues, and blood vessels to produce a live image on a monitor.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it safe for repeated use—even during pregnancy.
What Can Ultrasound Be Used For?
Ultrasound is a powerful tool in many areas of medicine, including:
✅ Abdominal Ultrasound
To evaluate the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and abdominal blood vessels.
✅ Obstetric & Gynecologic Ultrasound
To monitor pregnancy, assess fetal development, or examine the uterus and ovaries.
✅ Vascular Ultrasound
To detect blood clots (like DVT), evaluate circulation, or check for narrowed arteries.
✅ Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiogram)
To evaluate heart function, valves, and blood flow.
✅ Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
To visualize tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the arms, legs, or joints.
✅ Pelvic, Thyroid, Scrotal, or Breast Ultrasound
For evaluating abnormalities, lumps, or pain in specific areas.
What to Expect During an Ultrasound
Ultrasound exams are simple, noninvasive, and typically take 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
- You may be asked to wear a gown or adjust clothing for access to the scan area.
- A clear, water-based gel is applied to help transmit sound waves.
- The technologist will gently glide the transducer over the area of interest.
- You may feel light pressure, but the procedure is painless and comfortable.
- Real-time images are captured and reviewed by a board-certified radiologist.
No recovery time is needed—you can resume normal activities immediately after the exam.
