Deep Insight Without Radiation: MRI Imaging at Columbus Regional
When it comes to seeing inside the body with clarity and detail, few technologies match the power of MRI. Whether you’re investigating joint pain, neurological symptoms, or soft tissue concerns, an MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) offers a safe, noninvasive, and highly accurate view—without using radiation.
At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our Imaging Services Program offers advanced MRI services with a focus on precision, comfort, and convenience—helping your care team make informed decisions with confidence.
What Is an MRI?
MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed images of the body’s organs, soft tissues, joints, and nerves. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it especially valuable for frequent or long-term monitoring.
Common reasons for an MRI include:
- Brain and spine conditions (stroke, tumors, MS, herniated discs)
- Joint pain or injury (ligament tears, cartilage damage)
- Soft tissue concerns (muscle injuries, masses)
- Heart and vascular imaging
- Cancer diagnosis and staging
- Pelvic or abdominal issues
- Monitoring chronic diseases (like multiple sclerosis or Crohn’s disease)
What to Expect During Your MRI
An MRI is completely painless, though it does require lying still in a large, tube-like machine. Here’s what you can expect:
- You’ll change into a gown and remove metal items (jewelry, belts, etc.)
- You’ll lie on a padded table that slides into the scanner
- The scan is completely noninvasive—no injections unless contrast is needed
- You’ll hear loud tapping or thumping sounds during imaging (headphones or earplugs provided)
- Most scans take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area being imaged
A technologist will monitor you the entire time and can speak to you through a built-in intercom. If you’re claustrophobic, ask your provider about open MRI options or sedation.
MRI with Contrast
In some cases, your doctor may order an MRI with contrast—a safe injectable dye that highlights blood vessels, inflammation, or tumors. This is typically well tolerated and cleared naturally from the body.
