Early Detection Saves Lives: Mammography at Columbus Regional

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women—but when caught early, it’s also one of the most treatable. That’s why regular mammograms are a critical part of your preventive health routine. At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our OB/GYN team and Imaging Services work together to make mammography safe, accurate, and as comfortable as possible—so you can stay on top of your breast health with confidence.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialized X-ray of the breast that helps detect early signs of breast cancer, often before a lump can be felt. It can also identify:

  • Noncancerous (benign) growths
  • Microcalcifications (tiny calcium deposits)
  • Changes in breast tissue over time

We offer both screening mammograms for women with no symptoms and diagnostic mammograms for those experiencing lumps, pain, nipple changes, or other concerns.

When Should You Get a Mammogram?

Guidelines can vary based on age, risk factors, and personal history. In general:

  • Women 40 and over should have a screening mammogram every 1–2 years
  • Women with a family history or genetic risk may start earlier
  • If you notice any changes in your breasts, speak to your provider right away—don’t wait for your next screening

Our OB/GYN team will help determine the best schedule for you based on your health and personal risk profile.

What to Expect During a Mammogram

We understand that mammograms can feel intimidating—but our experienced technologists are trained to make the process quick, respectful, and supportive.

Here’s what happens:

  • You’ll undress from the waist up and wear a gown
  • Each breast will be gently compressed between two plates to get clear images
  • Compression lasts only a few seconds per image and may feel briefly uncomfortable but not painful for most women
  • The exam usually takes about 20 minutes
  • Results are reviewed by a board-certified radiologist and shared with your provider

If anything unusual is found, additional imaging—such as diagnostic mammography or ultrasound—may be recommended.

Why Mammograms Matter

  • Early detection = better treatment outcomes
