Mammography (Screening and Diagnostic)

Early Detection. Expert Care. Mammography at Columbus Regional Healthcare System

When it comes to breast health, early detection saves lives. That’s why regular mammograms—even when you feel fine—are one of the most important tools in detecting breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, we offer both screening and diagnostic mammography in a safe, welcoming, and advanced setting. Our Imaging Services Program is designed to support your health with compassion, precision, and timely results—because peace of mind matters.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that takes detailed images of the breast. It’s used to screen for breast cancer in people without symptoms, or to diagnose problems when symptoms like a lump or pain occur.

We offer two types of mammography:

✅ Screening Mammogram

  • For women with no symptoms
  • Typically performed annually starting at age 40 (or earlier based on family history)
  • Quick, routine test that takes about 15–20 minutes

✅ Diagnostic Mammogram

  • For individuals with breast symptoms, such as a lump, pain, nipple discharge, or skin changes
  • Also used to follow up on abnormal screening results
  • More detailed and may include additional views or ultrasound

What to Expect During Your Mammogram

At Columbus Regional, our experienced technologists provide gentle, respectful care every step of the way. During the exam:

  • You’ll stand in front of the mammography unit
  • Each breast will be positioned and gently compressed to get clear images
  • The process takes just a few seconds per image
  • You may feel slight pressure or discomfort, but it’s brief and manageable

Results are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist, and you and your provider will receive the results promptly—usually within a few days.

Why Choose Columbus Regional for Your Mammogram?

Our breast imaging team combines clinical expertise with the latest technology to ensure every patient receives:

  • Digital 2D and 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) for sharper, more detailed images
  • Comfort-focused care in a calming, private environment
  • Fast appointments and quick turnaround for results
  • Seamless referrals for ultrasound, biopsy, or surgical consultation if needed
  • Dedicated care coordination from screening through follow-up

We’re proud to support women’s health at every stage, from routine screenings to diagnostic follow-up and survivorship care.

When Should You Get a Mammogram?

Most women should begin annual screening at age 40, but you may need to start earlier if you have:

  • A family history of breast cancer
  • A personal history of breast disease or high-risk lesions
  • Known genetic factors (such as BRCA mutations)
  • Previous radiation to the chest before age 30

Talk with your provider about your risk factors and the best screening plan for you.

Be Proactive. Be Empowered.

Regular mammograms don’t just detect cancer—they provide peace of mind. And if something is found, early diagnosis offers the best chance for a successful outcome. At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, we’re here to help you take charge of your breast health with the expert care and respect you deserve.
