Early Detection Saves Lives: Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screenings at Columbus Regional
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the United States—but when caught early, it’s far more treatable. That’s why low-dose CT lung cancer screening has become a powerful tool in saving lives.
At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, we’re proud to offer Lung Cancer Screening CT scans through our Imaging Services Program—giving high-risk patients the chance to catch cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
What Is Lung Cancer Screening?
Lung cancer screening is a quick, painless imaging test that uses a low-dose CT (LDCT) scan to detect signs of lung cancer in people who are at higher risk, but who may not yet show symptoms.
This type of CT scan uses significantly less radiation than a traditional scan while still providing clear, detailed images of your lungs.
Who Should Be Screened?
Lung cancer screening is recommended for people who meet all of the following criteria:
- Are 50 to 80 years old
- Have a history of 20 pack-years or more (e.g., 1 pack a day for 20 years, or 2 packs a day for 10 years)
- Are a current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years
- Have no current signs or symptoms of lung cancer
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, our team can help evaluate your risk and talk through your options.
Why Early Detection Matters
Lung cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms until it has spread, making it difficult to catch in its early stages without screening. Low-dose CT scans can detect tumors when they are small and more easily treated, often before they’ve had a chance to grow or spread.
Studies show that screening high-risk individuals with LDCT can reduce lung cancer deaths by up to 20%.
What to Expect During Your Screening
A low-dose CT lung scan is:
- Noninvasive and painless
- Takes only about 5–10 minutes
- Requires no needles, contrast dye, or special preparation
- Allows you to return to normal activities immediately afterward
After your scan, our board-certified radiologists will review the images and send results to your healthcare provider, who will discuss next steps with you if needed.
