Cat Scan (CT)

See More, Know More: The Power of CT Scans at Columbus Regional

When your provider needs a closer look—inside your head, chest, abdomen, or spine—a simple X-ray may not be enough. That’s where CT imaging (also known as a CAT scan) comes in.

At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our Imaging Services Program offers fast, high-resolution CT scans to help detect, diagnose, and monitor a wide range of conditions. It’s advanced imaging that leads to faster answers—and better care.

What Is a CT Scan?

A CT scan (Computed Tomography) uses a rotating X-ray device and computer processing to create cross-sectional images of your body. Unlike a regular X-ray, which shows a flat image, a CT scan provides detailed, 3D-like views of:

  • Organs (such as liver, lungs, brain, kidneys)
  • Bones and joints
  • Blood vessels
  • Soft tissues
  • Tumors, infections, and internal bleeding

CT scans are used to help diagnose illnesses, guide treatments, and assess injuries quickly and accurately.

When Is a CT Scan Recommended?

Your provider may order a CT scan if you’re experiencing symptoms like:

  • Severe or persistent pain
  • Trauma or suspected internal injury
  • Unexplained swelling or masses
  • Abnormal lab or X-ray results
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Neurological symptoms (such as weakness or confusion)

CT scans are commonly used in both emergency and outpatient settings to detect:

  • Stroke, brain tumors, or head trauma
  • Appendicitis, kidney stones, or abdominal bleeding
  • Lung nodules, blood clots, or infections
  • Spine or skeletal abnormalities
  • Cancer staging or monitoring

What to Expect During a CT Scan

CT scans are quick, painless, and usually completed in under 30 minutes. During the scan:

  • You’ll lie on a padded table that moves through a circular scanner
  • You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds
  • In some cases, a contrast dye may be used (by mouth or IV) to enhance the images
  • A technologist will monitor you from an adjacent room and stay in contact via intercom

After the scan, you can usually return to normal activities right away unless told otherwise.
