Bone Density Testing (DEXA)

Strong Bones Start with Knowledge: Bone Density Testing (DEXA) at Columbus Regional

You can’t see or feel your bones getting weaker—but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Osteoporosis and low bone density affect millions of Americans, often without symptoms—until a fracture occurs. Fortunately, there’s a simple and effective way to catch bone loss early: Bone Density Testing, also known as a DEXA scan.

At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our Imaging Services Program offers fast, accurate DEXA scans to help you understand your bone health and reduce your risk of serious injury down the road.

What Is a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a specialized, low-dose X-ray that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It’s the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become thin, brittle, and prone to fractures.

DEXA scans are most commonly performed on the:

  • Lower spine
  • Hips
  • Forearms

These areas are most predictive of future fracture risk and are also common sites for osteoporosis-related breaks.

Who Should Get a DEXA Scan?

You may benefit from bone density testing if you:

  • Are a woman age 65+ or a man age 70+
  • Are postmenopausal with risk factors such as low body weight or family history
  • Have had previous fractures from minor falls
  • Use steroids or other medications that affect bone strength
  • Have medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, or low testosterone
  • Have experienced height loss or a noticeable change in posture

Talk to your doctor if you’re unsure—early detection is key to preventing fractures and maintaining independence as you age.

What to Expect During Your Bone Density Test

A DEXA scan is quick, painless, and noninvasive. During the test:

  • You’ll lie fully clothed on a padded table
  • A scanning arm will pass slowly over your body—no tunnel, no noise
  • The entire test takes 10–20 minutes
  • There are no injections or special preparations required

Results are interpreted by a radiologist and shared with your provider, who will explain what they mean for your bone health.

What Do the Results Mean?

Your DEXA scan will generate a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult:

  • Normal: T-score above -1
  • Osteopenia (low bone mass): T-score between -1 and -2.5
  • Osteoporosis: T-score below -2.5

Based on your results, your care team may recommend lifestyle changes, supplements, medications, or follow-up scans every few years.
