Moving Forward with Confidence: Hysterectomy Care at Columbus Regional
When other treatments haven’t worked, and symptoms are interfering with your life, a hysterectomy may offer lasting relief and a renewed sense of wellness. At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our OB/GYN specialists provide expert care for women considering or needing a hysterectomy—with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, personalized guidance, and support every step of the way.
A hysterectomy is a major decision, and we’re here to help you understand your options, feel confident in your care, and move forward with strength and peace of mind.
What Is a Hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the uterus. Depending on your medical needs, it may also involve removal of the cervix, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries.
Once the uterus is removed, periods stop permanently, and you’ll no longer be able to become pregnant. In some cases, hormone levels may change if the ovaries are also removed (surgical menopause).
Why You Might Need a Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is usually considered after other treatments have been tried or ruled out. Common reasons include:
- Uterine fibroids causing pain or heavy bleeding
- Endometriosis or adenomyosis
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Uterine prolapse
- Gynecologic cancers or pre-cancerous conditions
- Persistent infections or complications after childbirth
Types of Hysterectomy We Offer
Our surgeons at Columbus Regional are trained in a range of approaches, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures that allow for quicker recovery and smaller incisions.
🔹 Total Hysterectomy
Removes the uterus and cervix.
🔹 Supracervical (Partial) Hysterectomy
Removes the uterus, leaving the cervix in place.
🔹 Radical Hysterectomy
Often used for cancer treatment—removes uterus, cervix, upper vagina, and surrounding tissues.
🔹 Hysterectomy with Salpingo-Oophorectomy
May also remove one or both ovaries and fallopian tubes if necessary.
Minimally Invasive Options for Faster Recovery
Whenever possible, we recommend:
- Laparoscopic Hysterectomy – Small incisions, faster healing
- Robotic-Assisted Hysterectomy – Enhanced precision and reduced downtime
- Vaginal Hysterectomy – No abdominal incision; often used for prolapse or select conditions
These techniques often mean:
✅ Less pain
✅ Shorter hospital stays
✅ Faster return to normal activities
✅ Minimal scarring
What to Expect Before and After Surgery
Before your hysterectomy, your provider will walk you through:
- The reason for surgery and expected outcomes
- Your surgical options and recovery timeline
- What to expect with hormone changes (if ovaries are removed)
- Tips for preparing your body and home for recovery
After surgery, most women return to daily activities in 2–6 weeks, depending on the surgical method. We’ll monitor your healing and provide support throughout recovery.
