Understanding Bladder Issues: Urodynamics Testing at Columbus Regional
If you’re living with bladder leaks, urgency, or difficulty urinating, you’re not alone—and you’re not without options. For many women, bladder problems can be frustrating, embarrassing, and disruptive. At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our Urodynamics Testing helps us get to the root of the problem—so we can create a treatment plan that truly works for you.
This advanced, in-office diagnostic test evaluates how your bladder and sphincter muscles are functioning, giving our specialists clear insights into conditions like incontinence, overactive bladder, or urinary retention.
What Is Urodynamics?
Urodynamics is a series of tests that measure:
- How well your bladder stores and empties urine
- The strength and coordination of your bladder and sphincter muscles
- Pressure levels inside the bladder during filling and emptying
- Urine flow rate and bladder capacity
- Whether your bladder is contracting when it shouldn’t
These detailed measurements help us understand why you’re having symptoms—and how best to treat them.
Who Needs Urodynamic Testing?
You may benefit from urodynamics if you have:
- Stress urinary incontinence (leaking with cough, laugh, or movement)
- Urge incontinence (a strong, sudden need to urinate)
- Mixed incontinence (both stress and urge)
- Frequent or painful urination
- Difficulty starting urination or fully emptying the bladder
- Recurring urinary tract infections
- Prior pelvic surgery or bladder issues without clear diagnosis
What to Expect During the Test
Urodynamic testing is performed in-office, typically in under an hour, and does not require sedation. While it may feel a bit unusual, it’s not painful—and our team will walk you through every step with care and privacy.
The procedure may include:
- Uroflowmetry – You’ll urinate into a special device that measures flow and volume.
- Cystometry – A thin catheter fills your bladder with fluid while measuring pressure and sensations.
- Electromyography (EMG) – Small sensors monitor muscle activity in the pelvic floor.
- Pressure-flow studies – Measures bladder pressure while urinating to assess emptying function.
- Leak point pressure testing – Identifies the bladder pressure at which leakage occurs.
You may experience mild pressure or a sensation of fullness, but there’s no cutting or surgery involved.
After the Test
Most patients can resume normal activities right away. You may feel slightly sore or notice light spotting or urinary urgency for a short time. Your provider will review the results with you and explain treatment options based on your unique bladder function.
