Annual Gynecological Exams ( Pap Smear, Pelvic, and Breast Exams)

Prioritize Your Health: The Importance of Annual Gynecological Exams at Columbus Regional

When life gets busy, it’s easy to put your own health on the back burner. But when it comes to women’s health, annual checkups aren’t just routine—they’re essential. An annual gynecological exam provides the opportunity to check in on your health, screen for early signs of disease, and discuss any changes or concerns in a safe, supportive environment.

At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, our OB/GYN team is here to provide comprehensive, compassionate care—helping women of all ages stay healthy, informed, and empowered.

What Is an Annual Gynecological Exam?

An annual well-woman exam is a yearly visit focused on preventive health and early detection. It typically includes:

✅ Pelvic Exam

A physical evaluation of the reproductive organs (vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries) to check for abnormalities, signs of infection, or other changes.

✅ Pap Smear

A screening test for cervical cancer that involves gently collecting cells from the cervix. Depending on your age and history, Pap smears are usually recommended every 3 years—or more often if results are abnormal.

✅ Breast Exam

A manual check for lumps or changes in breast tissue. Your provider may also discuss your family history and determine when a mammogram is recommended.

In addition to these screenings, your provider may:

  • Review menstrual and sexual health
  • Discuss birth control or fertility planning
  • Address symptoms like pelvic pain or irregular periods
  • Screen for STIs
  • Review vaccinations, including HPV
  • Talk about menopause, hormone changes, or bone health

Why These Exams Matter

Even if you feel perfectly healthy, annual exams are crucial for:

  • Detecting issues early, before symptoms appear
  • Tracking health changes over time
  • Preventing cervical and breast cancer
  • Maintaining reproductive and sexual wellness
  • Building a relationship with a trusted provider

Most conditions—like cervical dysplasia, breast lumps, or infections—are easier to treat when caught early.

When to Start and What to Expect

We recommend starting annual gynecological visits around age 21, or earlier if you become sexually active or experience menstrual issues. Visits are tailored to your age and life stage, from adolescence through menopause and beyond.

During your exam:

  • You’ll have a chance to talk openly about your health and ask questions
  • Exams are done with care, privacy, and respect
  • You’ll receive a follow-up if any results need further attention
  • We’ll work together on a wellness plan that fits your goals and lifestyle

Your Care, Your Comfort

At Columbus Regional Healthcare System, we understand that gynecological visits can feel personal or even uncomfortable for some patients. That’s why our OB/GYN team is committed to:

  • Listening without judgment
  • Explaining every step of your exam
  • Creating a welcoming, supportive environment
  • Respecting your choices and preferences

Your health is our top priority—and that means making sure you feel heard, safe, and informed.
