Columbus Regional Healthcare System has opened a new Wound Healing Center located in Jefferson Plaza just down from the hospital, specializing in wound treatment and also offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The clinic offers the newest technological advances in wound healing, including advanced wound dressings and skin substitutes, that take the place of skin grafts.
The center is the first of its kind in the regions of Columbus, Bladen, Brunswick and New Hanover counties. Until now, patients needing hyperbaric oxygen therapy would have to travel out of the area to receive treatment.
As estimated 6.5 million Americans suffer from non-healing or chronic wounds that may be caused by diabetes, poor circulation or other health related disorders. In a hyperbaric chamber, a patient is exposed to 100 percent oxygen at high pressure, which helps wounds heal properly and often can help wounds heal faster, as the oxygen can be toxic to some bacteria.
The Wound Healing Center offers a clinical approach to wound care management and innovative technologies, along with a specialized clinical staff with advanced training and expertise in wound care management.
“Frequently, the best wound care is done on a weekly basis,” said David Holmes, Director of the Wound Healing Center.
