Columbus County team chosen for UNC Management Academy for Public Health
August 17, 2010
Six individuals from Columbus County have been selected to attend the Management Academy for Public Health, a nine-month program of the Gillings School of Global Public Health and Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Team members for Columbus County are:
Meleah Stanley – Extension Agent, Family and Consumer Services, NC Cooperative Extension, Terrie Priest – VP, Business Development and Community Relations, Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Kimberly Smith – Health Director, Columbus County Health Department, Carol Caldwell – Executive Director, Columbus County DREAM Center, Inc., Ann Johnston – VP Operations/Chief Operating Officer, Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Sarah Gray – Health Educator II, Columbus County Health Department.
Teams from health organizations and agencies from across the nation attend the Management Academy both onsite in Chapel Hill and through a variety of distance learning activities. The program emphasizes business skills applied to community health priorities. Academy instruction includes coaching on managing money, people, data, and partnerships.
The main focus for the participants is completing a detailed business plan addressing a public health need in their local community. Completed plans are then used to acquire funding for the project.
Building a community wellness center for the residents of Columbus County is the goal of the business plan for the Columbus County group. Ann Johnston, of Columbus Regional Healthcare System explains, “Improving health outcomes in Columbus County is an extremely important initiative, one we believe will require the support and resources of a diverse community-wide coalition. Historically, there has been a lot of interest in developing a community wellness center in Columbus County and we want to capitalize on that. We are excited about the support we are receiving from the UNC Management Academy and look forward to working with others in our community to make this vision become a reality.”
The Columbus Regional Healthcare System Foundation has established a designated fund and has made an initial contribution to support this and other community health initiatives. Those interested in supporting community health initiatives should contact Terrie Priest at 910-642-9303.

CRHS Auxilliary Donates over $25,000 in Equipment
August 21, 2008
|
The Auxiliary of Columbus Regional Healthcare System made several donations in 2008 to the hospital that helped improve efficiencies, enhance patient care and assisted students in obtaining a college degree. A 2008 Ford Van, valued at over $22,000, equipment for the laboratory, valued at over $2400, along with a $1000 donation to the HOSA Scholarship Fund were the 2008 gifts to CRHS.
The van, purchased locally, will be used to transport food/supplies to offsite locations, including meal and laundry service to the recently completed, Hospice Life Care Center. The Department of Laboratory Services received a STATspin Express 4 centrifuge, which will spin blood needed for chemistry tests in 3 minutes, as opposed to 10 minute equipment. “This new equipment will be so beneficial in providing a more rapid turn-around time, which will improve the patients’ experience” says Janet Royal, Director of Laboratory Services. “We were so honored that the Auxiliary chose to purchase this centrifuge for our department.”
Members of the Auxiliary provide many services to the hospital and the community, assisting in registration, greeting visitors at the information desk in the main lobby, providing communication with visitors/families in the surgical waiting room, helping out in various departments throughout the hospital, as well as staffing the appropriately named hospital gift shop, “The Sunshine Shop”, for visitors/employees. “Our volunteers provide a wonderful service to our hospital” states Terrie Priest, Vice President of Business Development and Community Relations, “It is always a comfort to see those pink (or blue jackets), those smiling faces and those warm expressions of assistance in all that they do.”
The money collected from fundraising events and sales in the gift shop go to support CRHS and the community. These recent donations to the hospital are just a few of the many monetary contributions the Auxiliary has made to CRHS over the past years. The Auxiliary has purchased equipment for the Physical Therapy Department; equipment for the Department of Laboratory Services; provided support to the Donayre Cancer Care Center with the purchase of goodie bags for cancer patients, DVD players for the Center and monetary support; and supported the Adopt-A-Child program sponsored by the Pastoral Care Department at Christmas as well as the hospital sponsored HOSA Scholarships.
If you are interested in joining the Auxiliary of Columbus Regional Healthcare System, please call Shelby Fuhr at 910-642-8011.
